Sixteen-year-old Nina Kane should be worrying about her immortal soul, but she's too busy trying to actually survive. Her town's population has been decimated by soul-consuming demons, and souls are in short supply. Watching over her younger sister, Mellie, and scraping together food and money are all that matters. The two of them are a family. They gave up on their deadbeat mom a long time ago.

When Nina discovers that Mellie is keeping a secret that threatens their very existence, she'll do anything to protect her. Because in New Temperance, sins are prosecuted as crimes by the brutal Church and its army of black-robed exorcists. And Mellie's sin has put her in serious trouble.

To keep them both alive, Nina will need to trust Finn, a fugitive with deep green eyes who has already saved her life once and who might just be an exorcist. But what kind of exorcist wears a hoodie?

Wanted by the Church and hunted by dark forces, Nina knows she can't survive on her own. She needs Finn and his group of rogue friends just as much as they need her.

Review

Wow! I love this book and the whole world that Rachel Vincent has created. If I’m to be honest I started off reading the book and I had a hard time getting in to it. I struggled to imagine it but as it was a review copy I decided to give it another go – and I’m so glad that I did now!

Although the story starts of quite slow-paced and does take a while to set the stones with the setting and this new world that Rachel has invented, but I assure you, you just need to pull through those first few pages and then once you get into it, it’s a fast paced adventurous and a whirlwind of a journey.

Nina is relatively different to the usual young adult protagonists we’re familiar with however soon you begin to understand her and really relate to her. She’s driven by one thing and that it making sure that her and her sister have enough to eat – her braveness, courage and determination on behalf of her sister was very admirable.

I was very happy with the diversity of personalities amongst the characters and each and every one of them quickly held their spotlight and soon it felt like you’d known them for ages. I liked the loyalty amongst these character and how they had each others backs.

The story was driven through Nina’s point of view and there was a fair share of action, adventure and craziness that kept you hooked. There was a lot of mystery and ambiguity but slowly slowly as the story infolded we received answers in the most peculiar way that took me by surprise. You think you know what’s coming up but suddenly this whole new world shatters apart with this huge revelation – I’m so glad I carried on as the story does take a while to take off but when it does, you can’t stop! I was reading well-ahead into the night. There’s a cute romance but with a paranormal edge which did escalate quite quickly but given the circumstances I don’t blame them.

A quick, mysterious and surprising read and very original. A dystopian where the Church and religion is the dominant in the society but also brings a flashback to the past and the status that religion held but now with a wicked twist.

Note: I received a review copy from Mira Ink via Netgalley.
