Review
After having read the second instalment I was eagerly
waiting to read the final instalment. It was more exciting after I saw the
cover for the final book. Can I just say…I love all three covers and I’m so
glad to have two of them sitting there looking beautiful on my bookshelf! J Yes although we do try
not to, as I always say readers DO judge books by their covers so it’s always
nice to see and admire such gorgeous covers as these in the Splintered series.
After having read the previous book a year ago it took me a
while to get into the book as I started off confused but as I read on I started
remembering what had happened. The characters however seemed distant and I had
a hard time getting into the book and feeling connected. There was little
mention or relation to the previous book and I found myself confused up until
the characters I loved started making their appearances – then the story picked
up.
Written in the same style as the previous book, we got our
share of humour, romance but something had changed for me. The characters
seemed distant it seemed a bit like when Katniss (Hunger Games) finds herself
in District 13 and it feels so 'other-worldly'. I guess that’s the atmosphere the
author was trying to create but I was unfortunate to not have read the first
book so it was really my first time entering wonderland which is probably why I
found it so different compared to the more high school setting in Unhinged.
The storyline was actually great, it was interesting but it seemed
too slow-paced and dragged. The whole first part of the book seemed like Alyssa
was stalling but after having loved the previous book I urged myself to carry
on to find out how this story ends. There wasn’t much of the excitement that I
was looking for and I was quite disappointed because I really did want to love
this book. I did love the story and how it all played out and the author did have
many interesting plot lines but some aspects such as the love triangle went
downhill. It didn’t seem like there was a love triangle anymore but felt Alyssa
actually loved one character so the whole plotline that was played out from the
previous book lost its way but towards the end was reclaimed. Speaking about
endings, I loved how the author ended the story, I thought it was a beautiful
ending and the only thing that I didn’t seem to follow was Alyssa’s relationship
with one of the boys which seemed a little fake and as a time-pass when I had expected
and hoped to start liking that particular character more and understand him
more in this book.
I strongly recommend this book for those who have followed the
story from the beginning as they definitely don’t want to miss out on the
ending. For me, I loved Unhinged and although I liked Ensnared it was a little
bit of a disappointment and I felt it wasn’t as upbeat as the previous book.
Nonetheless, the whole series was an amazing interpretation of Alice in
Wonderland and I would love to read more of her books because I like her
peculiar and dark approach to an old favourite.
*I received a ARC copy of the book from Abrams&Chronicle in exchange for an honest review.
